Story
This photograph captures a quiet but powerful moment in San Francisco Bay.
The sun had just begun to rise behind us—barely above the horizon—casting a soft, golden light across the Golden Gate Bridge. You can see it in the subtle glow on the structure, and in the way it catches the swimmer’s arm as it lifts from the water.
We were about thirty minutes into the swim.
This was a challenging route—from the Golden Gate Bridge toward the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge—a long open-water crossing that requires not just strength, but navigation. The current helps, but only if you stay on the right line. Miss the angle, and you can be pushed wide into the bay, well past your intended course.
I was there in a support role, piloting a small rigid inflatable boat alongside the swimmer—watching for boat traffic, managing feedings, and helping guide the route which I have done many times before, both in the water and in a supporting role.
