Story
This photograph came from one of those unexpected moments that photographers dream about.
I wasn't out searching for a rainbow. It was simply another day in San Francisco. I was walking along my usual route to the South End Rowing Club, heading toward Aquatic Park for a swim in the bay. Swimming was a regular part of my life then, and I had made that walk countless times.
On this day, however, nature had other plans.
As I approached the waterfront, I looked up and saw a double rainbow stretching across the opening of Aquatic Park, with Alcatraz sitting perfectly beneath it. The light was beautiful, the colors were vivid, and the entire scene seemed almost too perfect to be real.
Of course, I immediately pulled out my phone.
There was just one problem: the rainbow was too large to fit into a single frame. The technology available to me at the time wasn't nearly as capable as what we carry in our pockets today. So instead of taking one photograph, I took several, carefully capturing the rainbow section by section.
Later, back at home, I stitched the images together manually in Photoshop.
