An aerial view of the Benicia landmark junk crane. The clouds above are reflected in the calm waters below.

Story

This was one of those rare mornings in Benicia when everything aligned.
I headed down to First Street before sunrise, not knowing exactly what I would find—just following that instinct to go and see what the morning might offer. That’s often how it works. You don’t plan the image. You show up for it.
What I found was something unusual.
The water along the Carquinez Strait was completely still. Not just calm—still. Smooth as glass. In a place known for constant wind and moving water, it felt almost unreal.
Above me, soft, pillowy clouds filled the sky.
Below me, they were perfectly reflected.
From the ground, it was beautiful. From the air, it was extraordinary.
I launched the drone and began exploring—moving in every direction, searching for angles, patterns, alignments. The reflections transformed everything. Sky and water became interchangeable. Orientation became unclear. What was above and what was below began to blur.
It was one of those mornings where you don’t take one photo.
You take dozens.
Because you know how beautiful it is. This is one of seven from the same day.
This is a different view of the Benicia crane as another photo of this day—without the sunrise behind it, but in some ways, even more surreal.
From higher above, with the water still perfectly reflective, the clouds beneath the drone became a second sky. When I positioned the crane within that reflection, something unexpected happened.
It looked like the clouds were below it.
As if the crane were floating.
The usual sense of orientation disappeared. The water no longer felt like water—it became a surface of sky, and the crane, normally grounded and heavy, felt suspended in space.
This image is quieter than the sunrise version.
Less dramatic, but more disorienting.
It’s not about the light breaking through—it’s about the illusion. About how reflection can completely transform a familiar subject into something almost unrecognizable.
A structure rooted in history…
suddenly floating above the clouds.
