Story
At first glance, this photograph seems impossible.
How do you burn a handprint into ice?
That question is exactly why I like it.
I created this image during a cold morning walk along the beach. Overnight frost had formed on a driftwood log, covering it with a thin layer of white crystals. Just as the sun was rising behind me, I noticed the frost and immediately realized it wouldn't last long. Within minutes, the morning sunlight would melt it away.
So I decided to act first.
I removed my gloves and placed my hands on the frozen surface. The warmth from my skin melted the frost, revealing the dark wood beneath and leaving behind two handprints.
The effect was surprising.
Against the dark surface of the log, the melted areas resemble burn marks or soot, as though the hands had scorched the wood rather than simply warmed it.
