Story

How often do you get to see the aurora borealis in the San Francisco Bay Area?
Not very often.
I had seen it once before when I had even traveled to Iceland in January specifically to experience it. So when I started seeing photos pop up online—friends claiming the aurora was visible right here in the Bay Area—I was intrigued. It was in the news prior, but I had not been paying attention until I saw the posts online.
The next night, I went out to try to capture it with my drone.
I launched near the waterfront in Benicia, equipped for night flying with the required lighting. I sent the drone out over the water near the Benicia–Martinez Bridge and waited, scanning the sky, hoping to catch even a faint trace of that elusive glow.
