Story

Would you believe this little smiling face was part of what was, for a time, the world’s largest chalk art project?
This cheerful drawing may look small on its own, but it was one tiny piece of a much larger vision—thousands of individual chalk drawings created by students in Alameda. The project brought together schools, artists, volunteers, and an incredible number of young participants, all contributing their own creativity to a single massive artwork.
A friend of mine was of champion behind the effort, helping bring the project to life.
The scale was astonishing.
For days, the pavement filled with color as thousands of drawings gradually became something much larger than any one person could create alone. For a brief time, the project even held a world record before another community eventually surpassed it.
But records were never really the point.
The real achievement was what people created together.
